What is an ‘Unlimited Hotspot Device’?
- July 29, 2021
Personal Hotspot devices (also known as “hotspots”) are wireless internet access points that allow users to access the internet from any location, regardless of network bandwidth limitations.
In the past, many providers have introduced them as a way to boost broadband speeds, and many consumers have also found them useful as a means of saving money by switching providers.
However, some providers, including Verizon, AT&T and Comcast, have also started to restrict the number of devices that can be connected to a given network.
This week, Verizon and AT&amobile announced that they will now require customers to use two or more hotspots to access their data from any network, with Verizon adding that a customer must connect a “limited hotspots device” to the device.
This means that if a customer wants to download content from the Verizon, for example, the customer will need to connect the device to a Verizon hotspot and then download content through the device’s Ethernet connection.
AT&ams statement also states that a new “unlimited” hotspot feature will be introduced.
Verizon’s new restrictions, which were first reported by TorrentFreak, come in addition to Comcast’s decision to start limiting access to a single hotspot in the coming months.AT&&t, on the other hand, has announced that it will introduce a new feature to its network that will allow users of its network to use up to two personal hotspots on their devices.
The announcement states that the new “Unlimited” Hotspot device feature will enable customers to connect up to four devices to the same network, and that customers will have the option to either connect to the “Unified Hotspot Network” or “Univox” hotspots.
The AT&s announcement comes as Comcast is reportedly planning to introduce a “one-time, paid” plan to allow users in the US to pay to access a large number of hotspots over a certain period of time.
This means that Comcast will no longer have to provide users with paid data caps when they use their devices to access online services.
It is worth noting that AT&s unlimited hotspot devices will also require an additional $100 data cap, which will come as a relief to many customers who have already been paying for unlimited data for years.
