Wall Street to begin selling Google’s ‘mobile hotspot’ service to businesses, governments, students, and consumers
A mobile hotspot service from Google will be available to businesses in Canada and the United States as soon as early 2018, according to people familiar with the plans.
The Wall Street and media industry is scrambling to prepare for Google’s launch of the service, as the technology is becoming a new, emerging market.
The technology is the latest example of Google’s expanding dominance in the marketplace, after the company first announced its plan in 2013.
Google’s plan to expand its services beyond just the U.S. was announced in a document titled “Google’s Mobile Hotspot,” dated May 20, 2018.
The document was obtained by The Wall St Journal.
The company said the service would be available in Canada, the U:U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, India, Singapore, South Africa, Australia, and Germany.
Google said the mobile hotspots would be the “largest and most powerful mobile hotsphere ever” and that it would help to bring a new type of mobile user experience to millions of people around the world.
Google will also offer access to its existing Google Hangouts chat and video services for the mobile users.
The company’s plans have been met with some criticism, including from privacy groups and consumer advocates who have said the technology would be too intrusive and could lead to unwanted data collection by third parties.
Privacy experts and consumer groups have also said the system could be abused for tracking of users.
